Retracing Our Steps: A Photo Journey Through 100 Years of Taiwan

Exhibit will be featured in Hedberg Library July 13-25

The Hedberg Library is pleased to host a traveling photo exhibit exploring Taiwan's development over the past century. "Retracing Our Steps: A Photo Journey Through 100 Years of Taiwan" will be on display July 13-25. Discover the nation's transformation and understand what went into making Taiwan what it is today in these exquisite photographs.

"The first time something like this comes to Carthage is made possible by Art Cyr, who approached us about hosting the exhibit," said Lizz Zitron, outreach services librarian. "He has numerous relationships around the world that offer opportunities to Carthage we might not otherwise have. It's a very cool way to learn about the history and culture of Taiwan."

The photographs are a collection spanning 100 years of Taiwan's history, and so many are archival photos. The photos include everything from official government photographs to informal looks at daily life. These photographs are not for sale.

"This unique art show is different because it challenges preconceived ideas people might hold," Ms. Zitron said. "We see photos of indigenous people, feats of modern architecture and the ecology of Taiwan, for example. The photographs of daily life span 100 years, so it's interesting to compare how people lived their lives over the past century."

Where else will this traveling photo exhibit be shown? "We know Chicago is next, so it's exciting that Kenosha gets a look before the Windy City," Ms. Zitron said.
