Financial Aid

Costs

Full-Time Undergraduate (12-17 credits):

Some students are hesitant to consider attending a private college, thinking the cost is beyond their reach. That's not the case.

At Carthage College, more than 90% of all full-time students receive financial assistance. The average financial aid package (grants, scholarships, loans, and work opportunity) covers a substantial amount of the cost of full-time enrollment.

Carthage's no-need scholarship program enables even students from families with higher incomes to be eligible for financial assistance.

The Carthage Office of Student Financial Planning is your resource for making a higher education possible. Our goals are to provide you with information about sources of funding, assist students in completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and provide counsel when you have questions or are experiencing unusual circumstances.

Remember: Applying early for both admission and financial aid maximizes your opportunity to receive financial aid.

In addition, both full-time and part-time students are eligible to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to take advantage of the Federal Stafford Loan Program.

Payment Options

Note: You and your family may choose one or any combination of the below listed payment options to suit individual needs and budget.

Option 1: Pay the deferred amount, by cash, check, money order, or credit card (Visa, Mastercard or Discover)in full, prior to July 1, and a credit equal to 2 percent of the deferred amount will be credited to your account.

Option 2: A two payment option is available with one half the deferred amount due by August 15 and the balance payable January 15. Credit card payments are allowed with this option (Visa, Mastercard or Discover).

Option 3: The deferred amount can be divided into eleven equal payments which will be due on the first of each month from July through the following May. A service fee equal to one percent of the deferred amount, or a minimum of $50.00 is charged. No credit card payments are accepted with this option.

Option 4: After July 1, a nine-month payment plan is available with the first payment due by August 15 or at the time of check-in for the Fall Term. A service fee equal to one percent of the deferred amount, or a minimum of $50.00 is charged. No credit card payments are accepted with this option.

Option 5: PLUS (Parent Loan to Undergraduate Students) enables parents with good credit histories to borrow for dependent undergraduate students who are enrolled at least half time. The annual maximum for a PLUS is the difference between the cost of attendance and the total financial aid received. Although the interest rate fluctuates, annually it is capped at 9 percent. Option 6: Alternative Loans are available to students providing they meet the specified requirements. Each of these loans have different eligibility requirements. More information...

Option 7: Federal Work Study or Campus Employment is a great way for students to assist in contributing towards educational expenses. Students who qualify for Federal Work Study will have this reflected in their financial aid award. Students who do not qualify for the Federal Work Study program may participate in our Campus Employment program. Each program pays a minimum wage of $5.90 per hour and allows students to work 8 to 10 hours per week. Earnings are subject to both state and federal income taxes. Since wages are actually earned, these are not considered a direct award of financial aid to a student's account. Students choosing to apply wages to their account may do so.
