

Students studying geography and earth science at Carthage have many opportunities for enriched study, research experiences, and learning.
Carthage offers its undergraduate science students many opportunities to do significant research. One popular program at Carthage is the Summer Undergraduate Research Experience, or SURE. Students collaborate with faculty during the summer on a significant research project. Students
receive a stipend, room and board on campus, and a small research
budget.
J-Term is a month-long period of study in January in which all academic departments offer innovative courses on campus, as well as study tours in other countries. The Geography and Earth Science Department offers interesting courses every J-Term. Recent on-campus courses include The Science of Global Climate Change and The Fate of Our Most Precious Resource: Water. Geography faculty have also led J-Term trips to the Himalayas, Belize, India, the Galapagos Islands, Nicaragua and Hawaii.
Geography students have many opportunities for travel and field work. Field excursions can range from a local trip lasting a few hours to trips covering several thousand miles in a few weeks. The faculty have a diverse set of interests, and students should expect to visit urban, rural and suburban sites. The Carthage Geography and Earth Science Department is very successful at placing students in internships that allow them to apply what they've learned in the classroom to a real world employment situation. Geography faculty receive news of internships regularly, and notify students who have taken geography classes.
The Geography and Earth Science Department is pleased to offer advanced placement credit for the following AP Exams administered by the College Board. Contact the department chair for additional details about AP credit.
The Geography and Earth Science Department selects several students each year to be student fellows.
Fellows assist other students with free tutoring and work in the department. Interested students should talk to the department chair.
Through the generosity of friends and alumni, the Geography and Earth Science Department offers its students financial assistance through direct scholarships or departmental service awards.
