Geography and Earth Science

Dan Murray, '11

Hometown: Franklin, WI
Major: Geography and Earth Science
Minor: German

At the beginning of his freshman year at Carthage, Dan Murray had not yet declared a major. All it took was an introductory geography course taught by Dr. Julio Rivera to influence his decision to become a Geography and Earth Science major.

Dan believes the program is great because of the helpfulness of the professors and the opportunities it provides. "The Geography and Earth Science Department has done a lot for me here at Carthage," he said. "Students in the program have the chance to receive several scholarships and student fellowship opportunities."

Favorite professor: "I have enjoyed all of the professors in the department, but Julio has greatly enhanced my learning experience here. Not only did he get me involved in the department initially, but also he continues to help me along the program. He is an excellent instructor who is also extremely willing to help outside of the classroom."

Favorite class: "Meteorology was a very fun course to take. Professor Zorn made class fun ever yday and it was very interesting and useful material to learn."

Favorite moments at Carthage: Most of my best memories have come from my fraternity, Phi Kappa Sigma. Fraternities and sororities are a great way to create new friendships and exciting new opportunities."

Favorite spot on campus: "I love spending time at the TARC working out and playing sports. It is a great facility and I use it as much as I can."

Career goal: "My current career goal is to use the education and experience I have acquired from geography and earth science classes while working for the DNR as a park ranger."

"To me, history and geography go hand in hand. I usually don't see a huge distinction between the two, as everything that happens throughout history has its own geography and aspects of geography are historical in and of themselves."
