To fulfill your language requirement.
Every Carthage student must complete two modern language courses in the same
language (unless a student fulfills the proficiency requirement
established by the College). German classes at Carthage are typically smaller than French or Spanish classes.
To continue what you started in high school.
Students who studied German in high school can earn retroactive credits for courses they test out of, if they pass the course they test into with a “C” or better (up to 12 free credits).
To increase your marketability.
After English, German is the most widely spoken language in Europe. Studying German can complement a major in business, economics, geography, mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, education, philosophy, history, religion, political science, English, music or art.
To gain a global perspective.
You recognize the value of a deeper understanding of another language and culture in the context of your other interests. You want to apply this understanding to your pursuit of both personal and professional goals.
To gain multidisciplinary perspectives.
You’re not someone who simply checks off requirements. You want to actively pursue the ideals of a liberal arts education.
To keep your options open.
Perhaps you’re considering majoring or minoring in German. Taking German courses early in your college career means you won’t fall behind in the sequence of courses that would be required of you.
To learn more about your heritage.
Your ancestors were German, and you want to learn more about the language and culture.
To see the world.
You want to study, train, work, travel or live in a German-speaking country or in one of the many other areas of Europe where German is the primary or secondary language of business, either during or after your time at Carthage.
