Pictured at bottom are current co-President Karel Vollrath and Secretary Matt Breuer. The Philosophy Club at Carthage is a unique student group on campus that fosters active discussion and questioning beyond the classroom. Members aim to encourage dynamic conversation and acute discernment through a love of wisdom.
The club meets weekly. Members examine and discuss texts, articles and excerpts from the writings of the Ancient Greeks to the philosophers of today. The club also gathers to watch movies, hear from guest speakers, or listen to music that contains a hidden gem of wisdom. Occasionally, students are joined by professors from the Great Ideas, Philosophy and Political Science departments. These professors lead discussion on a text or philosopher. Members of Philosophy Club do not need previous experience in philosophy or Great Ideas courses.
Philosophy Club proudly organizes and sponsors the "Book that Changed My Life" lecture series that debuted in Spring 2009. Professors from all departments on campus are invited to give a presentation on a book that changed their way of thinking.

Popular lecture series draws professors and students deeper into Western Heritage texts. Read more.
"The classes in Great Ideas took me one step further into a more abstract realm that made it difficult to get mental satisfaction out of courses with solid answers and subject matter."
