An understanding of Islam is vital to an understanding of contemporary U.S. and world affairs. To expand the Carthage community’s understanding of Islam, I have invited this impressive cast of Muslim scholars and community leaders for a two-day symposium on “Islam in America,” to be held at Carthage in April 2008. Through a combination of plenary addresses and more intimate classroom discussions, speakers will address themes like: the future of American Islam, women in Islam, Islam and human rights, Islamic teachings on war and peace, and reformations of Islamic law in the modern world. This two-day symposium will feature free, public lectures by Imam Warith Deen Mohammed, Saleemah Abdul-Ghafur, and Liyakat Takim. Imam Mohammed will speak in Siebert Chapel at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 15. Ms. Abdul-Ghafur and Dr.Takim will deliver a joint address in Siebert Chapel at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 16. The speakers will address themes like: building community in the midst of diversity, fashioning distinctively "progressive" and "American" versions of Islam in the 21st century, and 21st-century. Islamic reformations in gender and law. The invited speakers are widely respected for their probing intellect, warmth of spirit, and unfailing courage in addressing controversial topics. The event promises to be an inspiring and memorable one in the life of the Carthage community.
