Japanese

Are you a fan of manga and anime? Have you thought about living/studying in a country with an amazing mixture of exciting pop culture and ancient traditions? Are you interested in speaking a language that is very different from your own? Do you want to add an important language skill to your resume? If your answer to any of these questions is "yes," then the Japanese program at Carthage is for you.

Japanese has become one of the most widely taught foreign languages in the United States. It has critical importance in a wide range of professions and interests, from politics and diplomacy to business, education and cutting-edge technology.

The core of the Carthage Japanese program is the four-year language curriculum, which is supported by courses in Japanese history, films, politics, religion and other fields offered in various other departments. The goal of the Japanese program is to help students develop proficiency in Japanese in a socio-cultural context. Students not only gain fluency in reading, writing and speaking Japanese, but also acquire a deep understanding of Japanese people and culture.

The Department of Modern Languages at Carthage offers courses in Japanese, and students interested in majoring in the language can work with department faculty and their advisors to devise a program. The College offers both a major and a minor in Japanese.
