J-Term at Carthage

J-Term in Hawaii

In January 2009, Carthage offered a J-Term study tour in Hawaii, where students experienced the islands' geology.

Their first stop was Oahu and Waikiki where students visited Pearl Harbor, hiked to Diamond Head Crater, and took tours of the north and south shores. Presentations were given on Hawaiian beaches, sand mineralogy, and Hawaiian waterfalls.

After a short island hop to Kauai, the group hiked through Waimea Canyon, snorkeled off of the Na Pali Coastline, and explored Alaka’I Swamp.

Next, students traveled to the island of Hilo, the home of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, where they toured the volcanoes. They also visited Mauna Kea, an ancestral burial ground. It is also home to the world’s largest telescopes. Students also had the opportunity to view molten lava.

The last stop was the island of Maui. While there, the students hiked to the top of Haleakala to see the sunrise and viewed waterfalls on a day trip.

Carthage professor Jane Livingston led the trip, which she plans to lead again on an upcoming J-Term.

Unearthing the Past. Students travel to Israel to excavate Roman temples of Omrit.
