This series focuses on aligning technology with educational best practices. Innovative use of technology can excite the mind and re-energize the practice of teaching. However, at the core of higher education teaching and learning there must be an adherence to sound pedagogy. In this series we will explore technologies that have educational potential and provide examples of how they are being used at Carthage and the greater educational community.
The following four themed sessions will be offered during the Spring 2012 semester, specific dates to follow. They each complete the sentence Using Technology to...
Using Technology to Encourage Student Engagement.
Technology can be a great tool for fostering student engagement and interaction. This session will show you some innovative ways to use technology to motivate your students to become more connected to course content, their classmates, and you.
Using Technology to Foster Group Work
Students notoriously abhor most group work for two main reasons; 1) finding a place and time to work together, and 2) uneven contributions by individual group members. Through the use of technology, you will be shown ways to make it easier for students to collaborate and more transparent for you to grade individual student work.
Using Technology to Organize Projects
With the middle of the semester fast approaching, our sights turn to the long-term projects that are due. This creates stress and confusion over what is due when and how to get it all done. Through the use of technology, projects become manageable and easier to grade.
Using Technology to Develop a Professional Identity
In collaboration with Career Services, this session will show students easy ways to use technology to set themselves apart during their employment searches. Carthage Career Connection and Google Sites will be shown to provide a current, online resume and showcase one's relevant coursework and projects. Tips for making the most of a Likedin account will also be shown.
Using Individual Technology Objectives to Add Easy, Helpful Technologies to Your Teaching
Sponsored by the Office of the Provost and Library and Information Services an Individual Technology Objectives (ITO) is a goal that you set in regards to your use of technology at Carthage College. Come listen as faculty who took part in this year's ITO pilot program share their experience and get ideas for your own ITO.
Library and Information Services offer technology training sessions throughout the year to the campus community. We will now also offer on-demand sessions to groups. Simply get a group of 5-15 colleagues together and contact Marta Magnuson to set up a date and time. These sessions will be tailored to the specific needs of your group.
Topics for these group sessions are of your choosing. If there is a technology not on the list that you are curious about, let us know and we can look into it for you and give a group session. You can also plan a session around a particular instructional issue or topic. The possibilities are endless.
