Carthage has hired Evelyn Buchanan, who brings more than 20 years of experience in institutional fundraising, as its vice president for institutional advancement.

Her resume features eight years in senior management at both public and private universities. Since 2011, Ms. Buchanan has worked as director of the Parents’ and Grandparents’ Fund at Colgate University in Hamilton, New York.

“Ms. Buchanan brings a lifetime of higher education experience in development and college relations to Carthage,” Carthage President Gregory Woodward said. “She has led and directed operations in virtually every aspect of the development world for more than 20 years. I am tremendously excited for her to join Carthage.”

Ms. Buchanan will take over the role previously held by Brad Andrews. At the special request of President Woodward and the Board of Trustees, Mr. Andrews became senior vice president for student success and strategic enrollment this fall.

As a regional advancement director at Colgate from 2011 to 2013, Ms. Buchanan helped complete a $480 million campaign. Before that, she was vice president for external affairs and executive director of the foundation at her undergraduate alma mater, State University of New York Empire State College. She also managed annual giving at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York.

Ms. Buchanan earned a Master of Science in nonprofit leadership from New England College. She attended SUNY Empire State for her Bachelor of Arts.

Carthage began the international search in August, with the help of Vance Peterson and his team from AGB Search. Joining him on the search committee were Molly Polk (chair), vice president for communications; William Abt, senior vice president for administration and business; Thomas Kline, associate vice president for strategic initiatives and graduate and professional studies; James Unglaube, director of planned giving; Robert Bonn, director of athletics; Professor Tracy Gartner, representing the faculty; and Gary D. Wilson, representing the Board of Trustees.

During the search, Mr. Unglaube also served as acting vice president. He collaborated with Elaine Walton, associate vice president for institutional advancement.

Ms. Buchanan is scheduled to start on Feb. 4. She will advise the president and trustees and will lead a staff of 15 in alumni and parent relations, fundraising, board relations, and other advancement services.

“Virtually everyone she met during her visits to campus seemed to develop an immediate bond and rapport with her, demonstrating what a perfect fit she is for our college,” President Woodward said. “Please join me in welcoming this highly skilled professional as the new leader of our excellent Advancement team.”
