Renowned playwright Jeffrey Hatcher was recognized with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the ninth annual Ivey Awards Sept. 23. The author of more than 25 plays, Mr. Hatcher is the 2013-14 Guest Artist in Carthage’s New Play Initiative, an effort that connects acclaimed writers from around the country with Carthage students for new works.

Mr. Hatcher’s plays have been produced on Broadway and around the world. He is perhaps best known for his play Compleat Female Stage Beauty, which he adapted into the 2004 film Stage Beauty starring Claire Danes and Rupert Everett. He wrote the screenplay for the 2008 film The Duchess, starring Keira Knightley and Ralph Fiennes, and the 2005 film Casanova, starring Heath Ledger, Sienna Miller, and Jeremy Irons.

For Carthage, he is writing a play titled No Name, based on a Victorian novevl by Wilkie Collins. The book tells the story of a young woman who is left penniless — and revengeful — after a miserly relative usurps her inheritance. No Name will have its world premiere in Carthage’s Wartburg Auditorium in March 2014. Mr. Hatcher has already visited Carthage this fall, and will continue to work with Carthage students and faculty in spring.
