Actuarial Science

The Carthage Mathematics Department offers coursework in actuarial science. Actuaries apply their knowledge of mathematics, statistics, finance and business to assess risk, often in the insurance and finance industries. A strong background in mathematics is essential. Actuaries generally have a bachelor's degree in mathematics or a related field, and must pass a series of exams.

Carthage has an excellent Actuarial Science curriculum. Students can tailor their choice of courses to their actuarial interests, and a member of the Carthage Mathematics faculty has written questions for the actuarial exams. Students who come to Carthage interested in actuarial work can pass two or more exams by the time they graduate.

Four Carthage courses are approved by the actuarial societies for VEE (Validation by Educational Experience) credit: MTH 3050 Theory of Statistics, MGT 3210 Financial Management, ECN 1010 Principles of Microeconomics, and ECN 1020 Principles of Macroeconomics.

Requirements

In addition to meeting the requirements of the Mathematics Major, students planning a career in actuarial science should include the following courses in his or her study:

MTH 2120 Multivariate Calculus
MTH 2130 Mathematics of Actuarial Science
MTH 3030 Theory of Probability
MTH 3050 Theory of Statistics (carries VEE credit)

Students should contact the chair of the Mathematics Department for additional information on preparing for the actuarial exams. Students planning to become actuaries may also take MGT 3210 Financial Management, ECN 1010 Principles of Microeconomics, and ECN 1020 Principles of Macroeconomics for VEE credit.
