Founded in 1847 as a Lutheran College, Carthage highly values its affiliation with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Our liberal arts curriculum includes courses that explore and celebrate religion and spirituality. Faith-oriented programs and student religious organizations offer students many opportunities to strengthen their faith as they discover how they can serve others in the Church and in the world.
Worship ServicesWorship services are offered on campus on Wednesday mornings and Sunday evenings during the school year, including an 8:45 p.m. Mass coordinated by our Roman Catholic lay minister with area priests. Worship services are held in the A.F. Siebert Chapel and often include inspiring musical performances by student groups.
Bridges to PeaceThis unique program is offered on Monday mornings during the school year. Students, faculty and staff gather for topical discussions concerning contemporary culture, academic research, international affairs, social concerns and personal interests. Every Bridges to Peace program has a theme, and most feature special guest speakers.
Invitation to MeditationOn Fridays, the Carthage community is invited to gather in the Fritsch Meditation Chapel for a time of stillness and contemplative prayer. Meditation is practiced today by people of many faiths and cultures. This program offers a space for quiet meditation and reflection, allowing students and faculty to retreat and refresh.

There are many ways that Carthage students can participate in ministry. Student organizations include: Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship, Carthage Christian Athletes, Catholic Fellowship Group, Lutheran Student Movement, and CUMBYA (Carthage Undergrads Making Big Youth Activities), which hosts activities for middle and high school youth.
Music GroupsStudents who want to share their faith through music can join the Gospel Messengers, a touring choir that has brought their music ministry to audiences across the United States and in Europe and Africa; the Carthage Choir, the nation's second oldest touring college choir; or one of several other music groups on campus.
Student ServiceCarthage students work together to serve others through organizations like Habitat for Humanity, Carthage United to Rescue the Earth, and others. Members of Pals and Partners work with area school children, offering afterschool activities every week. Members of the service organizations Circle K and Pi Delta Chi volunteer for organizations and events.
Progressive Religion CurriculumThe Carthage curriculum includes courses that explore world religions and spirituality. All Carthage students must take two religion courses, including Understandings of Religion, in which students explore the role of religion in communities and cultures. Other courses explore the Gospels, ethics and morality, religious history, and religions around the world.
