Modern Languages

The Department of Modern Languages at Carthage offers study in Chinese, French, German, Japanese and Spanish. The major and minor programs are designed to develop students’ communication skills in understanding, speaking, reading and writing the language.

Students who choose to major in a modern language at Carthage will be introduced to significant works of literature, take courses with native speakers, study abroad for at least a full semester, and develop excellent language ability. They will be provided with experiences that will sharpen their sensitivity to and appreciation of a culture or worldview different from their own.

Immersion in the Language: On-Campus and Abroad
All Modern Language courses are taught in the language being learned. All involve the student as an active participant. Small classes promote a relaxed atmosphere, where students communicate, play learning games, and feel comfortable honing their language skills. Target Language Experts teach introductory courses, providing a lively, authentic and engaging learning experience.

Because we believe that immersion in the linguistic and cultural settings of a foreign country is essential to a modern language major, all modern language majors at Carthage are structured around a required study abroad experience.

Career Opportunities and Advancement
Knowledge of a foreign language enhances a job applicant's attractiveness to employers, no matter what field you are in. A modern language major should be considered by students who are interested in government service, joining the Peace Corps, working in international commerce and industry, or working in criminal justice or social work. It is essential for students who wish to teach a language at the high school level or continue their language studies in graduate school.

Many Carthage language majors also major in another area. Sometimes the two majors are connected, as with International Political Economy or Asian Studies. Sometimes the synergies are apparent to the individual student, as with Physics or Chemistry. The modern language major is also appropriate for students who desire a broad liberal arts education that cuts across several areas of study.
