Alpha Mu Gamma

Written by Alpha Mu Gamma president Megan Spatchek

Alpha Mu Gamma is Carthage's foreign language fraternity. The Pi Chapter of Alpha Mu Gamma first started in Carthage, Ill., and then moved to Kenosha, Wis. It was granted its charter on February 12, 1945.

Alpha Mu Gamma comes from the initial letters from the phrase: "Amphi Mouse Glosson”" or for the Muse of Languages. The key represents intellectual endeavor, which unlocks the doors to other literatures and cultures. The scroll symbolizes achievement, learning, and the love of literature. The golden bough is our emblem, which was taken from Virgil's "Aeneid." It embodies friendship and the sympathetic understanding of other peoples.

Our chapter of Alpha Mu Gamma tries to encourage students to learn a different language, or how to understand those who speak another language. We try to encourage students to major or perhaps minor in a language because it is so important to be able to communicate.

Our chapter participates in National Foreign Language Week, which is a week set aside by the U.S. Government to honor those who study different languages. Also, in the past, we have had foreign film festivals, a carnival, and translated Valentines, along with other fundraisers. A special community outreach program that Alpha Mu Gamma participates in is Holidays around the World during a Family Fun Night. We give the younger children fake passports and give them experiences of holidays in different countries.

So far this year, Alpha Mu Gamma has been to a conference in Connecticut at Fairfield University. Our advisor, Professor Matt Borden; Molissa Owen; Ryan Pouros; and Megan Spatchek presented on "How to make academic texts for approachable for foreign language students." Our advisor is currently using a new type of approach to academic texts in Spanish such as El Mio Cid, La Celestina and Las Jarchas. As the students in this class know, these are difficult texts, and would be much more difficult if we used an older book for them. We are very excited to have participated in this conference and are hoping to do more for the next one.
