Carthage Choir

Founded in 1927 as the Carthage College A Cappella Choir, the College's premier vocal ensemble is now in its 82nd year. The Carthage Choir is believed to be the second oldest a cappella touring choir in the United States. Originally a choir that performed a cappella choral music solely from the sacred repertory, the choir now performs sacred and secular music from the full expanse of choral traditions.

Since 1973, the choir has taken 10 European tours to Holland, East and West Germany, The Czech Republic, Poland, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, France, and, most recently, England and the reunited Germany. The choir tours Central Europe every three years during the College's January term.

About the Conductor

Music professor Eduardo Garcia-Novelli is conductor of the Carthage Choir and Director of Choral Activities at Carthage. Dr. Garcia-Novelli is a native of Argentina and most recently director of choral activities at Lamar University. After serving for six years as assistant director of the National Young People Choir of Argentina and a fruitful high school choral directing career in Buenos Aires, including several international tours, he moved to the United States to pursue graduate studies. He graduated with distinction with a master of music from Westminster Choir College in Princeton, N.J., and completed his doctorate of musical arts degree from the University of Houston.

While in Houston, Dr. Garcia-Novelli served for five seasons as assistant director of the Houston Symphony Chorus. In that capacity, he helped in the preparation of large choral-symphonic pieces for world-renowned conductors such as Christoph Eschenbach, Peter Schreier, Hans Graf, Hugh Wolf, Helmut Rilling, and others. At the University of Houston, Dr. Garcia-Novelli founded the University Men's Chorus and conducted the University Women's Chorus and the Moores School Chamber Singers.  Prior to his tenure at Lamar University, Dr. Garcia-Novelli served as director of choral activities at Lee College in Baytown, Texas. He guest-conducted the Clear Lake Symphony and Baytown Symphony orchestras. Also a church musician, Dr. Garcia-Novelli served as director of music ministries in churches in his home country, in New Jersey, and in Houston.

Dr. Garcia-Novelli is a national prize winner for the "La Nacion" (Argentina) and the American Choral Directors Association (USA) competitions. His wife, Maria Fernanda, is a periodontist; they have two children, Mateo and Camila.
