Music

Mission

It is a Music Department goal that all students, regardless of their major, might come to both understand and enjoy music more fully. Toward that end, the College counts four semesters of private music lessons as fulfilling its general education requirement in fine arts.

The department offers students a wide variety of academic courses, performance ensembles, class lessons, and on- and off-campus concerts. For those who would specialize in music, the department provides professional training wholly compatible with the College's liberal arts tradition. With our state-of-the-art electronic keyboard lab, we even offer non-credit class piano workshops for both adults and children.

Goals and Objectives of the Carthage Music Department

  • To offer substantial opportunities to the general student through appropriate courses, performing ensembles and private lessons, which will develop a love for and understanding of music, the ability to communicate that appreciation and understanding, and the means to continue life-long music experiences.

  • To develop comprehensive musicianship and provide career preparation, a basic mastery of the music discipline, and performance skills for music majors in a particular emphasis (core major, music education, music performance, music theater, piano pedagogy, jazz, and church music).

  • To enhance and enrich the cultural life of the campus community and the community at large through a regular and well-supported program that presents students, faculty and guest musicians in recitals, concerts and other musical events.

  • To participate in worship and liturgy and to assist in proclaiming the Gospel to the campus community and to the larger community.

  • To function as a center providing comprehensive opportunities to the surrounding communities for music study and for participation in music performance activities.
