Seuss-a-thon Feb. 27

The Carthage College Center for Children's Literature and Student Wisconsin Education Association, in conjunction with A Book for Every Child Foundation, will hold the 12th annual Seuss-a-thon on Saturday, Feb. 27. Readers of all ages are invited to Hedberg Library for an all-day celebration of Dr. Seuss.

Seuss-a-Thon Facts

• The 12th Annual Seuss-a-thon will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 27.

• The Seuss-a-thon celebrates the March 2 birthday of Dr. Seuss (Mr. Theodore Geisel).

• There will be interactive activities and guest readers.

• Past readers include Carthage President F. Gregory Campbell; Mary Modder, president of the Kenosha Educators Association; principals from Racine and Kenosha schools; Carthage professors; Carthage students; and members of Carthage student organizations.

• Attendees can get their picture taken with the Cat in the Hat at the event.

• Last year's Seuss-a-thon raised almost $2,500 and was attended by about 1,200 people.

From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., there will be various performances and readings of Dr. Seuss-related material, as well as interactive activities. Gourmet green eggs and ham will be served. There will even be a visit from The Cat in the Hat himself.

"Seussical the Musical" will be performed at noon and 2 p.m.

Community members and organizations are welcome to stop by and listen to the different performances and book readings throughout the day, or sign up for a time to read a Dr. Seuss book. Around 1,200 people attended last year's event.

Reading this year will be Carthage President F. Gregory Campbell; Carthage professors Paul Zavada, Paul Ulrich, Prisca Moore and Leslie Cameron; Frances Kavenik of AAUW-WI; KUSD Director of School Leadership Karen Davis; and Kenosha Head Start Principal Melody Orban, among others.

The goals of the Center for Children's Literature and A Book for Every Child Foundation are to provide each baby born in the area with a quality children's book, and to support local not-for-profit organizations that help bring kids and books together. In past Seuss-a-thons , more than 10,000 books have been presented to babies born in area hospitals, children and families at the Shalom Center, the Boys and Girls Club, and other community associations.
