"One Day in the Season of Rain"

March 21, 2010

The Carthage Theatre Department stages a new English translation of the Indian play "One Day in the Season of Rain" March 25-27.

"One Day in the Season of Rain" was written by Mohan Rakesh, an important post-independent playwright, in 1958. The Carthage Theatre Department commissioned a new translation by Aparna and Vinay Dharwadker, both professors at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday in Wartburg Auditorium.

"One Day in the Season of Rain" tells the story of local poet Kalidasa, who has a difficult decision to make. He has been invited to claim the title of court poet — a title promising fame and glory — but accepting the honor means leaving behind the village that bore him and the woman who inspires him. It is both a touching love story and a modern imagining of the life and trials surrounding India's greatest classical poet.

The new translation reflects the Theatre Department's strong commitment to new and innovative work, said professor Neil Scharnick, the play's director. Last season, Carthage commissioned a new play by Oscar-winner and Steppenwolf Theatre ensemble member Eric Simonson. "Honest" debuted at Carthage in March 2009 and was later performed by Steppenwolf. Carthage Theatre students traveled to Saginaw Valley State University in Michigan in January to perform "Honest" in the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival.

Students performing in "One Day in the Season of Rain" include Elodie Senetra, ‘13; Stephen Schreiber, ‘10; Jessica Smith, ‘11; and Jeff Sabbar, ‘12. Stage manager is Hannah Binish, ‘10, and lighting designer is Colleen Geddes, ‘11.
