John Welch, vice president of Rothschild Investment Corporation and a Carthage alumnus, will speak on Greece's financial crisis, government debt and government responsibility in a public lecture on Thursday, May 6.
The lecture, titled "Greece's Financial Crisis: Could This Be America's Future?", will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Niemann Media Theatre of Hedberg Library.
Greece's plight is acute. The social and economic problems have already spawned street violence. In 2009, government debt grew to 113 percent of the economy (gross domestic product). The budget deficit for 2009 was 12.7 percent of its gross domestic product. Two thirds of the debt is now owed to foreigners, as reported by the Institute of International Finance. Could this be the future for America? What responsibility does government have in our everyday lives?
Mr. Welch has been with Rothschild Investments since 1988 and has more than 30 years of investment management experience. He has served on the boards of public companies, and was a trustee of a public pension fund. Previously he was an investment officer with Bear Stearns and Bache Halsey Stuart, where he was responsible for advising both individual and institutional accounts. He received his bachelor's degree from Carthage and remains active in Carthage affairs. He completed advanced studies at the New York Institute of Finance.
This event is supported by the Brady Corporation Foundation and Wisconsin Foundation for Independent Colleges Inc., and is co-sponsored by the A. W. Clausen Center for World Business, the Carthage Finance and Investment Club, and Students in Free Enterprise.
Refreshments will be served. Please RSVP to Deborah Usinger by e-mail or by calling (262) 551-5833.
