Classics professors lead summer field archaeology experiences

June 14, 2010

The Carthage Classics Department offered two excavation experiences for summer 2010, as part of Carthage's J-Term.

Professor Daniel Schowalter took a team of students to Omrit in northern Israel to spend five weeks excavating at the site of an ancient Roman temple. For more information, contact Professor Schowalter.

Professor Christine Renaud invited students along on her excavation work in Ostia, Rome. Professor Renaud and three of her students — Jeannie Christofalus, '12; Jessica Fisher, '13; and Joseph Hensgen, '12 — are working with a team from the University of Bologna for the summer. They are working on an important new excavation opening, very close to where an Italian archaeologist discovered a room in opus sectile (cut marble) that is one of the best existing examples of late antique wall decoration. That hall dates to 384 C.E. (A.D.).
