Carthage held its fifth annual Kenosha Scholarship Luncheon on Friday, June 25, celebrating eight members of the entering Class of 2014. The students are all Kenosha residents who have received full tuition scholarships to Carthage.

Melissa Davison, a graduate of Bradford High School, received the 2010 Police and Fire Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a first-year or transfer student who is a dependent of officer or fire fighter working for the City of Kenosha.

Seven students received Kenosha Oaks Scholarships, full-tuition scholarships that recognize academic excellence, community service and leadership potential. Those seven students are:

  • Alexandra Andrea, a graduate of Tremper High School
  • Crosby Bradford, a graduate of Christian Life School
  • Kelsey Brunner, a graduate of Tremper High School
  • Kathryn Klausegger, a graduate of Tremper High School
  • Alyse Mikolas, a graduate of Bradford High School
  • Erick Pacheco, a graduate of Bradford High School
  • Elizabeth Tindall, a graduate of Tremper High School

The Kenosha Oaks Scholarships are awarded to residents of the City of Kenosha in consideration for the lease of parkland to the College for the construction of the new Oaks student villages. Four of the Oaks villas are open; a fifth is under construction.

This is the 22nd year of the Kenosha Police and Fire Scholarship, and the fifth year of the Kenosha Oaks Scholarship. In total, 60 full-tuition scholarships have been awarded.

"The quality of the students who are earning these scholarships is outstanding," said Kenosha Alderman Michael Orth at Friday's lunch. "We are going to keep these outstanding students in the city of Kenosha. ... That's one of the things Carthage gives back to Kenosha. At any one time, there are 32 scholarships being paid for by Carthage College to citizens of Kenosha. That's a huge investment in us."

In May, the first Kenosha Oaks Scholars graduated from Carthage: Kristiena Escobar, Christina Garcia, Katelyn Hartstern, Veronika Jerikova, Kristen Stangas and Joseph Williams. "Their plans after graduating include the pursuit of jobs in areas such as analytical chemistry, teaching and completion of master's degree programs in fields such as veterinary school, economics and public policy or urban planning," said Brad Andrews, vice president for enrollment and student life at Carthage. "What we celebrate here today really leads to great things as we move forward."
