This year's theme is Take Me Out to the Concert: Nine Innings of Baseball Music. The concert will feature selections associated with the national pastime as well as music written by composers who were notorious baseball fans. James Ripley, Director of Instrumental Music Activities at Carthage, will conduct the concert, which is free and open to the public.
Parking along Campus Drive will not be permitted for this concert. Audience members are asked to bring chairs and sit on the lawn in case the patio seating is filled.
Nine musical selections will be played, each forming one "inning" of the concert. The band will open with John Philip Sousa's arrangement of the national anthem, followed by Leroy Anderson's The Minstrel Boy, a tune that was used extensively in Ken Burns' documentary on the sport. Highlights from Clark Gesner's You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown includes several songs from the musical, including "The Baseball Game." Randol Alan Bass' Take Me Out to the Ballgame is a setting of the Thayer poem with narrator and band. Paul Hegland, Assistant to the President at Carthage and die-hard baseball fan, will read the narration.
Three selections by composers also known for their love of the game complete the program. Charles Ives' March 6: Here's to Good Old Yale, William Schuman's The Band Song, and Robert Russell Bennett's Schottische from Old American Dances give a set of quaint reflections on the simplicity and timelessness of the game.
Naturally, a seventh inning stretch will be provided for the playing of "Roll out the Barrel."
