Chemistry students recognized

October 26, 2010

Carthage chemistry students Kristen Jones, '11, and Dan Noffke, '11, took second place in a poster competition Oct. 22 for their poster and presentation on chloride concentrations in the Pike River.

The competition was sponsored by the Younger Chemists Committee and the Local Milwaukee American Chemical Society Section. It included 20 competing posters; 16 of the posters were by graduate students.

Kristen, from Kirkland, Ill., and Dan, from Lake Villa, Ill., presented the poster "Monitoring Chloride Concentrations of the Pike River in Southeastern Wisconsin." The research was conducted with chemistry professor Christine Blaine.

Chemistry professor CJ Stephenson, who was a judge for the event but recused himself from judging the Carthage students' poster, said that the other judges were impressed with the students' presentation and their research results, in addition to the applied nature of the research.

Other graduate and undergraduate student presenters were from the Medical College of Wisconsin, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, the University of Wisconsin-Washington County, Lakeland College, ACS Division of Small Chemical Businesses, and Wixon Inc.

A $75 prize was shared by the two Carthage presenters.
