Art Department seeks Assistant Professor of Art

November 1, 2010

The Department of Art at Carthage College invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Art, Studio Foundations. An M.F.A. in Studio Art is required for this three-year, full-time, renewable position. Other requirements include an active exhibition record and at least one year of teaching experience in studio art foundations beyond graduate school. Commitment to curriculum development of art fundamentals, awareness of critical issues facing art foundations programs, interest in a wide variety of media and diverse approaches to art are a necessity. Candidates must have exceptional drawing skills. The appointment begins August 2011.

Preference will be given to applicants experienced in coordinating and teaching in an Art Foundations Program. Preference may be given to those with additional skills in printmaking, darkroom photography, woodworking or performance. Candidates knowledgeable in studio safety, including EPA, OSHA, and DNR standards, are encouraged to apply, as are those with experience in assessment of student learning and accreditation standards.

Responsibilities include coordinating and teaching fundamental studio courses in drawing, 2-Dimensional Design, 3-Dimensional Design and possibly an area of specialization. It is imperative that the candidate be able to work with other faculty to develop and implement cohesive and consistent foundations courses that provide the basis for further study in art. Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to, student advising and mentoring, maintaining art studios, ordering of supplies and equipment, attending faculty and committee meetings, service to the college and community and one's own creative work and scholarship.

The candidate is expected to support the mission and strategic development of the Art Department, the Division of Fine Arts, and the College. Interdisciplinary interests and commitment to working with other programs and departments in the liberal arts and sciences, as well as with the College's Heritage Program—the core of the general education curriculum—are desirable.
