Imani Winds performs at Carthage

March 17, 2011

The Carthage Chamber Music Series presents Grammy-winning quintet March 27

The Grammy Award-nominated wind quintet Imani Winds will perform at Carthage Sunday, March 27, as part of the College's Chamber Music Series. The concert begins at 3 p.m. in A. F. Siebert Chapel. A free pre-concert lecture begins at 2 p.m. in the H. F. Johnson Recital Hall.

Imani Winds has established itself as one of the most successful chamber music ensembles in the country. Known for its dynamic playing, culturally poignant programming, and genre-blurring collaborations, the quintet bridges European, American, African and Latin American traditions. They have performed in Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, Disney Hall and Kimmel Center, among others. The quintet regularly collaborates with artists ranging from Yo-Yo Ma to Wayne Shorter.

The group's awards include a 2007 American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers Award, and a 2002 CMA/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming. The quintet was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2006 for Best Classical Crossover Album for The Classical Underground.

Imani Wind members are Valerie Coleman (flute/composer), Toyin Spellman-Diaz (oboe), Mariam Adam (clarinet), Jeff Scott (French horn/composer) and Monica Ellis (bassoon).

Concert tickets cost $10, $8 for students and senior citizens. No reservations are required. Tickets will be available at the door. For ticket information, call (262) 551-5859.

This is the third concert in the 2010-11 Chamber Music Series season. Trio Levade will perform on April 2. Fifth House Ensemble will perform on April 30. The Carthage Chamber Music Series is made possible with a grant from the Helen C. Smolenski Chamber Music Fund of the Racine Community Foundation.
