Carthage hosts Gandhi's granddaughter

September 19, 2011

Usha Gandhi-Gokani, granddaughter of the legendary Indian peacemaker Mohandas Gandhi, will speak at Carthage on Wednesday, Sept. 21, the United Nations International Day of Peace. The title of her speech is "What it means to be a peacemaker." The free program will be held at 7 p.m. in A. F. Siebert Chapel.

She is speaking at the closing ceremony for Circles of Peace, an 11-day series of events in the Racine-Kenosha area. A highlight of the program will be the first performance of a new hymn, composed for the event by Greg Berg, assistant professor of music at Carthage.

Main sponsors of the event are Peace Learning Circles, a non-profit educational organization that teaches conflict resolution skills, and the Choral Arts Society of Southeastern Wisconsin.

During the program, Peace Learning Circles will announce a Kenosha resident and Racine resident as "Peace Mentors" for each community in 2011-12. The Peace Mentors were chosen from nominees in each community, and Peace Learning Circles hopes to make this an annual honor. Since its founding in 2006, more than 8,000 students and adults at 26 schools in Racine, Kenosha, and Walworth counties have participated in its programs.
