Carthage welcomes children's book illustrator David Diaz

Carthage welcomes Caldecott Medal-winning children's book illustrator David Diaz for a special Carthage Family Fun Night at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14. Mr. Diaz will work with children and their families to create works of art.

Mr. Diaz has illustrated many award-winning books for children, including Smoky Night by Eve Bunting, for which he was awarded the Caldecott Medal; The Wanderer by Sharon Creech, which received a Newbery Honor; and Diego: Bigger Than Life by Carmen T. Bernier-Grand, a Pura Belpre Honor Award winner.

Visiting from his home in Carlsbad, Calif., Mr. Diaz will share his experience of illustrating for more than 25 years. He is also a graphic designer, painter and an accomplished ceramic artist.

Books will be available for purchase and signing. There is no charge to attend. The visit is sponsored by the Center for Children's Literature at Carthage.

Carthage holds Family Fun Nights on most Friday evenings during the school year. Children and their families are invited to campus to participate in special themed activities, use the N.E. Tarble Athletic and Recreation Center, or use the Hedberg Library.
