Chamber Orchestra Concert: "East Meets West"

November 1, 2011

The Carthage Chamber Orchestra and the Percussion Ensemble will join together for a concert titled "East Meets West" at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, in the A.F. Siebert Chapel. The eclectic program will include Russian chant and folk song, Indonesian Gamelan, French Impressionist Music and contemporary literature. Composers include French masters Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy and contemporary composers Henryk Gorecki and Colin McPhee.

Gamelan Anklung begins the program and is a transcription of authentic gamelan music for percussion ensemble by Percy Grainger. Another Grainger transcription is the Pagodes movement from Debussy's Estampes. Both include a wide array of keyboard percussion instruments, pianos and gongs. Debussy's Petite Suite and Ravel's Valley of the Bells complete the French array of music. Canadian composer Colin McPhee's Tabuh Tabuhan is another gamelan-based work, including two solo pianos. Completing the program are Three Pieces in Olden Style by Gorecki, a Polish composer influenced by Slavic folk song and chant.

Soloists for Colin McPhee's Tabuh Tabuhan are music professor Deborah Masloski and Ms. Rachel Cui. Prof. Masloski is on the piano faculty at Carthage and has been a guest soloist on two other occasions with the instrumental ensembles. Ms. Cui teaches piano in the community education area at Carthage. Leading the Chamber Orchestra will be co-conductors Darlene Rivest and James Ripley, as well as student conductor Michael Becker. The Percussion Ensemble is under the direction of Michael Kozakis.

Admission to the concert is free and open to the public. Doors open at 7 p.m.
