The Buffalo Are Back by Marie Torres Cimarusti: Book Cover

The Buffalo are Back is an informative narrative describing the decline and eventual return of the buffalo in the North American prairies. The story gives a fairly detailed depiction of the causes and effects of the destruction of the buffalo. It also provides a brief summary of many significant events in United States history, mentioning not only Theodore Roosevelt but also the establishment of many prairie reserves and the successful attempts of the U.S. government to reestablish the buffalo in their homelands. The story is beautifully illustrated and easy to understand. Even with the simple story-telling technique utilized, it provides detailed information that would be interesting to any student or teacher interested in history, buffalo, or prairie restoration. Due to the nature of the content, the story would be best recommended to students of upper elementary and middle school ages.
