A DIFFERENT LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AT CARTHAGE: Unique Classes Offered During January Term

Each January, traditional methods of teaching and learning yield to a host of alternative approaches. J-Term gives students and faculty a chance to experiment, discover, and dream. Students have the opportunity to explore new subject areas, reinforce and expand existing knowledge, test creativity, create a personalized learning situation, travel or study at another college, or take regular term courses taught in a different format.

Carthage offers a variety of courses for students during J-tem, some of which are not available during Spring and Fall terms. Here are a few of those classes:

Program Director of Physical Education/Health Cynthia Allen and Associate Professor of Psychology Leslie Cameron will be teaming up to present the symposium class “Fat- America’s ObsessionStudents and Teacher With Being Thin.” This course will look at current statistics and long term affects of obesity, as well as study how society has created an environment in which it is easy to ignore healthy lifestyles. More importantly, Professor Allen and Professor Cameron will motivate students to find their own personal ways to apply this to their lives.

Assistant Professor of Business Administration Julie Dawson will be focusing on “Personal Finance” in her J-Term course. This introductory-level course will look at the psychology of spending, encourage financial literacy, and use financial software such as Quicken. Being a hands-on class, the course will cover creating and following a budget, buying a car, renting an apartment, and personal investing.

For students who are interested in digging deeper into personal investment, Assistant Professor of Business Administration Joseph Wall will concentrate on “Security and Portfolio Analysis.” In this highly individualized course, students will be able to investigate different areas of investment and design their own investment analysis projects. Each class session will attempt to incorporate equal parts of theoretical knowledge, real world professional trading methodology, and topics chosen by students. This course is for anyone who wants to learn how to set up a portfolio, or who has an interest in the markets or in the lucrative world of professional investing.

Carthage Series Examines Economic Issues Affecting Voters

The A. W. Clausen Center for World Business at Carthage College is hosting a series of five Tuesday evening discussions examining economic issues pertinent to the upcoming elections. These programs started Sept. 30 and will run through Oct. 28.

The upcoming programs will cover “Energy: Oil Use, Renewable Energy, Energy Security, Sustainability,” “Wall Street at Risk: What it Means for Pensions 401(k) Plans,” and “Tax Policy and Deficit Spending.”

The program facilitators are Associate Professor of Business Administration Mary Krome and Associate Professor of Political Science Jerald Mast. Introductory presentations from both major political parties are planned for each program.

“The idea of this is to produce informed voters,” Prof. Krome says. “You may not change your positions on the candidates, but you will know where they stand.”

COMMUNICATING QUICKLY: Emergency Notification System

Last fall Carthage introduced a multi–modal emergency notification system that allows all students, faculty and staff to be informed of life-threatening situations. Authorized personnel have the ability to send text messages, deliver broadcast e–mail messages, and place automated telephone calls to the entire college community within minutes of an emergency situation.

All members of the Carthage community have the ability to manage their own subscription information and to test their ability to receive text messages. Returning students can check on their subscription or create a new subscription at www.carthage.edu/sms. A Novell username and password are required to access this page.

New students will receive an email within the next few days with instructions on how to create and test their subscription to the Emergency Notification System.

The college tests the system once each semester. Before each test, notices are sent encouraging people to subscribe or check on their subscription.

Residence Life Council

For students living on campus, Residence Life Council (RLC) is a great organization to help them get connected within the residence halls.

RLC works to make general improvements in the halls (like adding peepholes to room doors and helping to change the smoking policy). This organization also focuses on providing fun activities within the halls.

RLC sponsors all campus programs each year including events such as Alcohol Awareness Week, Little Siblings Weekend and the War on the Shore Sand Volleyball Tournament.

Have your student contact Kyla Hylinski at khylinski@carthage.edu for more information.

Residence Life

The Residence Life Hall Directors, Assistant Hall Directors, and Resident Assistants will all be hosting a variety of programs over the next month.

Programs will focus on resident’s getting to know one another and attending campus wide events together. As the residential staff will be working to know the resident’s in each of their communities, please encourage your student to seek them out for questions and advice.
