Whitney A. Shartle

Whitney A. Shartle came to Carthage from William Fremd High School in Palatine, Ill. She played four successful years of Varsity Golf for Carthage, earning all-CCIW honors three times. She still holds the record for the lowest single day score (76 at Illinois Wesleyan).

"Through my membership in PAD, I was able to meet several students and professors who assisted me, both in pursuing law school and in finding internship opportunities."

While at Carthage, Ms. Shartle served as an executive member of the social service sorority Kappa Phi Eta for three years. When she was vice president of Kappa Phi Eta, she successfully encouraged the membership to take a more active role in the Kenosha community.  The women of Kappa Phi Eta were, and still are, heavily involved in the Kenosha Kids Foster Care Organization, as well as the Special Olympics.

During her junior and senior year, she was a member of Phi Alpha Delta, the pre-law honor society.

"As a member of PAD, I was able to socialize with other Carthage students who were considering legal careers, and many of us worked together throughout the law school application process and the LSAT," she said. "Through my membership in PAD, I was able to meet several students and professors who assisted me, both in pursuing law school and in finding internship opportunities.

"Carthage provided a unique curriculum that allows students to take distinctive courses that are not offered by conventional schools," she continued. "For instance, my junior year, I took a J-Term class titled ‘So, you want to be a lawyer,’ led by Professor Brent McClintock.  The course provided us with an in-depth look at the realities of law school and the legal community. My senior year, I had the opportunity to travel to Eastern Africa with Professor Yuri Maltsev on a world economics comparative study, where we had the privilege of meeting the leaders of the World Bank in Dar Es Salam and various other national leaders from Kenya, Malawi and Tanzania."

Ms. Shartle graduated from Carthage with a 3.49 GPA and a double major in business and marketing.  She took the LSAT and entered the Thomas M. Cooley Law School in 2006. She will graduate from Cooley in January and plans to take the February 2010 Bar Exam in Illinois.  She is currently working for a civil litigation firm in Jefferson Park, Ill.

"My Carthage College education has been an integral part of my success and I am an extremely proud alumnus."

"My Carthage College education has been an integral part of my success and I am an extremely proud alumnus," she said. "Both the curriculum and the personal attention provided by the faculty gave me educational opportunities that most college students never have the privilege of experiencing."
