Carthage is a vibrant college of the arts and sciences distinguished both by its ambitious liberal arts curriculum and its idyllic setting on the shore of Lake Michigan. Faculty growth, campus development, and the steady rise in quality and quantity of student applications reinforce Carthage's reputation as a highly respected academic institution.
The College now seeks an accomplished and visionary Provost to help shape its future.
As the Chief Academic Officer primarily responsible for the leadership and administration of academic affairs, the Provost reports to the President and serves as a member of the President’s Advisory Council. The Provost carries responsibility for the allocation of all academic resources at the College.
The Provost leads the faculty in realizing the teaching mission of the College. The Provost also guides the College’s academic and pre-professional programs in education, fine arts, humanities, natural sciences, social sciences, and interdisciplinary studies. Further oversight responsibilities include curricular support programs—Writing Across the Curriculum Program, Tutoring Center, Writing Center, Career Center, and the Technology Fellows Program.
Founded in 1847, Carthage is a private college of the arts and sciences committed to its affiliation with the Lutheran Church (ELCA). Carthage awards degrees in more than 45 subject areas, and seeks to educate students as whole persons—intellectually, spiritually, socially, and physically. The faculty includes 150 teacher-scholars, two-thirds of whom hold tenure or tenure-track appointments. Also, there are more than 100 adjunct instructors, many of whom have taught at Carthage for years.
More than two-thirds of the almost 2,500 Carthage students live on campus. In addition, Carthage’s Adult Education program enrolls approximately 1,000 students each term, all of them taking courses on the campus. The College has maintained balanced budgets for twenty-two years, concurrently managing impressive growth in the quality and quantity of faculty, students, and facilities.
Situated midway between Chicago and Milwaukee, with easy access to both, Carthage benefits from the relaxed environment of a small city. Attractive property values enhance the recruitment of Carthage faculty and staff members.
For best consideration, the Search Committee requests applications by Monday, November 30, 2009. Review of applications will continue until the position is filled. Candidates should submit: curriculum vitae; letter of interest, including a statement articulating the candidate’s vision for a liberal arts institution in the 21st century; and contact information for three professional references. Electronic submissions are preferred. Confidential nominations of self or others, inquiries, or expressions of interest should be directed to:
