James Bartholomew Oren, '12

Majors: Psychology, Sociology
Minor: Asian Studies
Hometown: Algonquin, Ill.

James Oren has always been interested in psychology. As he grew, so did his passion for the subject. He wants to work in adolescent psychology someday, either through the sociology of education or as a child psychiatrist.

"Carthage provides a lot of opportunities as long as you are willing to work toward them," James said. "I intent to go to Japan in 2011 over J-Term, which I am excited about." The Psychology Department also offers some unusual courses, he adds, "such as a pirates class that I took over J-Term my freshman year. It actually gave a lot of good insight into how pirates really were opposed to what movies show them as."

Favorite professor: "Ingrid Tiegel. She is socially aware and knowledgeable, which makes learning interesting. With her, you not only get textbook knowledge, but she provides real world examples."

Favorite class: "Child and Adolescent Development. It was challenging, yet it was a subject of interest for me. We all go through development, so to read and hear about theories and combine it with your own ideas made it fun."

Toughest class: "Cognitive Psychology, mainly because I've always been a social psychologist."

Favorite moments at Carthage: "The closeness you form with select people make many moments great. It is a big reason one should consider a smaller college."

Favorite spot on campus: "Either on the beach or on the rocks overlooking the beach."

Biggest surprise so far: "The diversity of teaching styles and experiences of the professors."

Advice for students considering a psychology major: "Make sure it is psychology that you want and not a social work major. That seems to be a pitfall for some."
