Major: Social Work
Minor: He's considering a minor in religion.
Hometown: Gurnee, Ill.
Career goal: "I would like to get my MSW and be successful at whatever I do. I would like to work with the mentally ill."
Louis Dimock was drawn to Carthage for its Social Work program. He liked that it was an accredited program and that the location of Kenosha worked well for his needs as a social work student. Louis decided to study social work because of his involvement in his church, youth group, and Boy Scouts.
"I really feel that social work is my calling. I enjoy helping people and hearing everyone's story," he said. "I want to see that people are having the best possible time that they can."
Even as a freshman, Louis has already had a chance to observe with some of the agencies in the area. "You get involved right away through going out to see different agencies for observation hours," he said.
Favorite professor: "Ruth. She keeps class fun and exciting and she really engages the students with questions that often provoke discussions between classmates. The discussions are where a lot of the learning comes from."
Favorite class: "Intro to Social Work is my favorite."
Toughest class: "History of Social Welfare. It's a lot of history."
Favorite moments at Carthage: "Meeting new people and making new friends."
Favorite spot on campus: "Standing down by the lake."
Biggest surprise so far: "The visitation hours ... not long enough, and how much food there is to eat."
Advice for prospective students considering a major in social work: "Have an understanding that social work is really what you want to do. Don't make your decision too soon. There is plenty of time to choose social work."
