Major: French
Minors: Spanish, Secondary Education
Fulbright Scholar

Stephanie Coulis embraced other cultures early in life. From age 5, she studied French. In high school, she was among an elite group of Indiana students who studied for seven weeks in Brittany, France. Stephanie won the French Scholarship competition at Carthage, and spent her sophomore year spring semester studying in Caen, France.

"I never learned so much in five months," she recalls. "Studying alongside students from Ghana, China, Japan, and the U.S. — all immersed in French culture — was an enormous challenge, and privilege."

Stephanie discovered Spanish as a Carthage sophomore and took J-Term trips to Guatemala and Mexico. After her graduation, she was named a Fulbright scholar, and taught English as a second language to first- and second-year elementary students in France.

She plans to pursue a career as a diplomat. "At Carthage I found the people and resources to make me a fuller, more well-rounded individual. My studies helped me become more observant, listen more skillfully, and ask better questions," she said.
