The Green Pledge Participants

This is a wonderful pledge I plan to help Carthage and beyond work on sustainability for our planet.

If we re-use our coffee mugs at Starbucks, the coffee is almost free (65 cents). And, we don't use cups and cardboard sleeves which are headed for landfills.

I would love to see Carthage start a composting system for all of the waste produced from on-campus dining. With all of the beautiful landscaping here, a compost system can create great soil for our own campus. Also, I would love to see the dining options promoting reusable cups and discounts for soda with a reusable container. This pledge is a great start!

Everybody can help make this world a better place just by being conscious of reducing what you buy, reusing what you can and recycling as much as possible.

Thank you - this is great. It would be wonderful to get a recycling program going that actually works! We also could do great things with composting all of the shrubs, flowers, etc that we replace several times a year. Student/faculty gardens would also be terrific. Some campuses have "salad bowl" gardens in public places where you can pick greens for salad or to add to lunches. What a great way to build community. I'll be happy to help any way that I can.

I think that people really need to start taking responsibility for where their cigarette butts ends up if they smoke. This campus is technically an Arboretum, and the trees, grass, beach, and lake are all highly susceptible to pollution. I'm sure that I am not the only one who is upset to see cigarette butts all over the ground because smokers are too lazy to clean up after themselves. Please take responsibility for your actions!

Becoming a vegetarian reduces one's carbon footprint by the equivalent of removing ten SUVs from the highways. While this may not be a popular option for many even eliminating animal products from our diet for one day per week, such as "Meatless Mondays" (or Fridays for some Roman Catholics?), has more positive impact on our environment than any other single thing we might do. Of course, hats off to Quality of Life and others who remind us to adopt environmentally sustainable pathways to light our way through this life.
