The liberal arts come to life in the Carthage Western Heritage program,
where faculty and students across divisions and departments show how
our intellectual landscape is rooted in a common core.
The
beginnings of general education stretch back to the time of Homer. In
the Iliad, we hear Phoenix describe his instruction of the young
Achilles, and this education continues to develop over the centuries
through Plato, Aristotle, and Roman thinkers.
In fact, the earliest surviving author who lays out the plan of the liberal arts wrote in the ancient city of Carthage!
Western Heritage seminars today give us all the chance to engage in this thousands-of-years-old tradition.
