Student Opportunities in Heritage

Students who excel in Western Heritage seminars may win special scholarships, earn All-College Honors, or become Heritage fellows. Students can also get individual help in Carthage's Writing Center, or pursue further study in the Great Ideas program.

Awards & Scholarships

A number of Heritage scholarships and awards are awarded each year for papers written for Heritage courses. These scholarships offer an opportunity for currently enrolled students to receive substantial scholarship support.

Great Ideas

The Great Ideas program is unique to Carthage, and continues the intellectual journey begun in Western Heritage I and II. The versatile Great Ideas degree gives students extensive skills in communication, reasoning and critical thinking.

Heritage Fellows

Several Heritage students are selected each year to be a Heritage Fellow. Fellows assist other students with free tutoring and work in the department.

Honors Western Heritage & All-College Honors

For a student to graduate with All-College Honors, he or she must take at least one semester of Honors Western Heritage. Some students are invited into an Honors Western Heritage seminar before the fall semester of their freshman year. Other students will be nominated to take an Honors Western Heritage seminar by their Western Heritage I professor.

Writing Center

The Carthage Writing Center is a resource available for all Carthage students, but especially students taking their Heritage seminars. The Writing Center is staffed by Heritage Fellows, and many Western Heritage seminar instructors will send their assignments to the Writing Center so their students can get individual assistance in writing Heritage papers.
