Carthage’s Urban Teacher Preparation Program (UTPP) hosted a middle school student group from the Kenosha YMCA for a week-long summer camp!

The event was part of the Rising Pipeline to College Program, which the Education Department designed as a grow-your-own model for local middle and high school students. Each year, UTPP invites a group of students interested in college and, specifically, careers in education to campus.

Carthage's Urban Teacher Prep Program hosted a summer camp for middle school students. Under the supervision of Professor Siovahn Williams, director of UTPP, and Karen Cano, UTPP program manager, Carthage students Grace Chapa ’24 and Eleanor Barreca ’26 led math and ELA literacy sessions. Emily Restivo ’23 led a DNA experiment with strawberries, and Shelldyn Earnest ’25 led the STEAM workshop.

The Social and Emotional Learning session was led by Dionne Thompkins and Shauna Hodges of Kenosha Unified School District. The African American Youth Initiative (AAYI) joined in the Affinity Group and Admissions Showcase and BBQ. Carthage’s Office of Equity and Inclusion staff and students — Endia Robbins, Nina Alfano ’24, Julia Peters ’24, and Phillip Hunter ’24 — also supported the camp event.

We look forward to meeting with this group of middle school students in the fall during their next on-campus visit.
