Come see the Carthage Philharmonic perform their fall concert at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6, in the A. F. Siebert Chapel!

The Carthage Philharmonic is a dynamic ensemble that prides itself on its commitment to growth, excellence, and camaraderie between ensemble members to create a more connected sound. Showcasing the standard orchestral repertoire as well as hidden masterworks from underrepresented composers, the Carthage Philharmonic is dedicated to bringing the community the excitement and variety of orchestral music.

The Carthage Philharmonic will perform Ernest Bloch’s “Concerto Grosso No. 1” and Reena Esmail’s “The Voyage,” as well as Ottorino Respighi’s “Ancient Airs and Dances, Suite 3,” the latter of which will be guest-conducted by conductor Jörg Birhance from Vienna. Mr. Birhance is a German-born conductor who studied with other notable conductors such as Sergiu Celibidache and Constantin Bugeanu. He is an expert on the orchestra music of Egon Wellesz and has held master courses in conducting in Germany, Hungary, Italy, and Mexico.

The Carthage Philharmonic is directed by the 2017-18 Carthage Distinguished Teacher of the Year, Professor E. Edward Kawakami. Prof. Kawakami is a conductor, associate professor of music, director of orchestral activities, and an active clinician and adjudicator. Before his work at Carthage, Prof. Kawakami conducted the California State University, Northridge Symphony, and Chamber Orchestras. He also conducted various musicals and film soundtracks and served in guest conducting positions across Southern California. Prof. Kawakami has collaborated with award-winning musicians such as Grammy Award-winning violinist Mark O’Connor and Pulitzer Prize winner Ellen Twillich.
