We are excited to announce several planned updates for Campus Dining for the 2023-24 academic year!

Since Parkhurst Dining took over Carthage’s dining program in June 2022, three new dining options opened in the Campbell Student Union, Re.Fuel opened in the N. E. Tarble Athletic and Recreational Center, Greens & Grains was added to The Caf, and Lentz Do Lunch was remodeled.

Meal plans

In addition to these facility improvements, Carthage rolled out new meal plans developed in partnership with students. Now that we have had time to see the new plans in action, we have made adjustments. Carthage Student Government, the Parkhurst Dining team, and Carthage staff have gathered your input and have improved and expanded the meal plans available to residential students for the 2023-24 academic year.

Notable improvements include:

  • Daily meal exchanges are redeemable anytime during the day.
  • The Premium Plan now includes three daily meal exchanges.
  • Flex 1 and Flex 2 plans now include more Birdie Bucks.
  • Residential seniors have access to a new Birdie Bucks Plan, giving them desired flexibility during their last year at Carthage.
  • Carthage Cash is being officially retired; Birdie Bucks will be Carthage’s only campus currency. Students can still add Birdie Bucks to their IDs via the GET App as needed throughout the year.
  • Barnes & Noble will accept Birdie Bucks issued with meal plans and Birdie Bucks added using the GET App.

Statements in Workday

We are now able to record charges on student statements in the new Workday system. In the past, there was only the ability to post your room and board charges together. Now, in our new system, we have the ability to break each area out separately. You will see charges for board appear in Workday once you select your meal plan during check-in that will open on Thursday, June 1.

Starbucks moving to Hedberg Library

Lastly, we want to share an important update about Carthage’s Starbucks. At the conclusion of this academic year, construction will begin on a new full-concept Starbucks at the current location of Einstein Bros. Bagels in Hedberg Library. This centralized location will allow Starbucks to be open seven days a week and for extended hours in the evening to better serve students on nights and weekends.

Construction will last throughout the fall 2023 term, and during this time, the current Starbucks location will operate as usual. The new Starbucks location will open for the spring 2024 term. Once the new Starbucks is operational, Lentz Do Lunch will extend its daily Monday through Friday hours until 5 p.m. for students or staff unable to make it to the library or the south side of campus for dinner or a snack before an evening class. See initial renderings of the new Starbucks below:

This also means that Einstein’s will no longer have a presence on campus after May 28, 2023. Given the popularity of Einstein’s menu items, beginning in fall 2023, Parkhurst will operate a similar breakfast concept in the Campbell Student Union featuring bagels, breakfast sandwiches, and coffee alongside Flex Kitchen, Pacific Harbor, and the Local Scene. All current Einstein’s employees are Parkhurst employees and will continue to work on campus at different retail locations.

We deeply appreciate all of the student feedback and collaborative conversations over the past year, and we look forward to all of you experiencing the exciting new Campus Dining offerings next year.
