Janan Najeeb to speak at Interfaith Lunch Thursday
We welcome guest speaker Janan Najeeb, president of the Milwaukee Muslim Women’s Coalition and chair of MICAH’s clergy caucus, to Interfaith Lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Thursday, April 11, in the Ehrler Hospitality Center.
Free lunch is provided to all who attend. Students are invited to stay longer for continued conversation, as they are able.
About Janan Najeeb
Janan Najeeb is a proud Palestinian American Muslim and an alumna of UW-Milwaukee. She is a founding member and the current president of the Milwaukee Muslim Women’s Coalition, and she runs the Islamic Resource Center, a cultural center and lending library. She founded the Wisconsin Muslim Civic Alliance, Milwaukee Muslim Film Festival, Wisconsin Muslim Journal, and Our Peaceful Home, Wisconsin’s only culturally specific, family-strengthening and domestic violence project, serving greater Milwaukee’s Muslim community.
An interfaith leader, Ms. Najeeb chairs the Committee for Interfaith Understanding of the Interfaith Conference of Greater Milwaukee. She is the first Muslim, the first non-clergy, and only the second woman to lead the Milwaukee Innercity Congregations Religious Leaders Caucus in its 35-year history. A highly sought-after speaker, Ms. Najeeb has spoken all over Wisconsin and at many national conferences and events. She is the first Muslim to offer an opening prayer at the Wisconsin State Legislature. She has been featured in numerous magazines, newspapers, and television shows locally, nationally, and in several countries.
Ms. Najeeb serves on many community boards, including Wisconsin Public Radio, Wisconsin Historical Society, Marcus Performing Arts Center, and Rotary Club of Milwaukee. She has co-chaired the citywide annual Dr. MLK Birthday Celebration for 18 years, and she chairs the Commission for the Milwaukee Office of Violence Prevention.
Ms. Najeeb is the author of numerous articles, opinion pieces, and book chapters, including a chapter in “Interfaith Engagement in Milwaukee: A Brief History of Christian-Muslim Dialogue.” She is the recipient of countless awards, including the Wisconsin Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies’ Dick Ringler Distinguished Peace Educator Award, International Museum of Muslim Cultures Excellence Award, Interfaith Conference of Greater Milwaukee Award for Social Justice and Activism, and Rotary Person of the Year Award.
Ms. Najeeb is married to Waleed Najeeb and has five adult children. She lives in Mequon, Wisconsin.
