The Communication Major
A major in Communication is designed to blend the theoretical and the practical, giving students grounding in the liberal arts tradition and the skills required for employment. Both historical and modern theories are examined as platform for critical faculties and the skills required to become an effective communicator. Students are trained in written and oral communication. Special emphasis is placed on the ability to communicate using electronic and digital media.

Employers consistently rank communication as one of the top skills they look for in potential employees.
Employment of public relations specialists is expected to grow faster than the average for all occupations through 2018. The need for good public relations in an increasingly competitive business environment should spur demand for these workers, especially those with specialized knowledge. Employees who possess additional language capabilities also are in demand. The emergence of social media in public relations is expected to increase job growth as well. Employment in public relations firms is expected to grow as firms hire contractors to provide public relations services rather than support more staff.
Nationally communication majors with bachelor’s degrees reported starting salaries of $34,610 in 2010. The starting salary for a Public Relations Specialist is $34,000.
