Carthage and COVID-19

FAQs: Athletics

Athletics

Can Carthage Athletics practices resume this semester, even though in-person classes will not?
No. With the remainder of the semester transitioning to all virtual instruction, there will be no practices or training permitted for any of the athletic teams the rest of this semester. The NCAA had already announced all remaining winter and spring championships are canceled. The CCIW and Carthage also made the decision to cancel all remaining conference and non-conference competition for the rest of the spring season.

Can I still come to campus to work out on my own in the athletic facilities?
No. To protect the health of our students and community, all Carthage athletic facilities will remain closed to all students (including student-athletes) through at least the rest of the spring semester.

Will spring sport student-athletes be able to regain a season of participation?
On March 13, 2020, the NCAA approved a blanket waiver that waives the use of a season of participation for all student-athletes in spring sports, regardless of whether they had practiced and/or competed already. Therefore, in spring sports only, student-athletes will not be charged a season of competition regardless of how many contests or dates of competition a student-athlete participated in.

Will spring sport student-athletes be able to retain use of term in their 10 semester/15 quarter limit?
On March 13, 2020, the NCAA also approved a blanket waiver that waives the use of the spring semester toward a student-athlete’s limit of 10 semesters/15 quarters.

Does the waiver apply to winter sport student-athletes who were still competing in championships when the NCAA canceled them (i.e., basketball, swimming and diving, indoor track and field)?
The blanket waiver does not apply to winter sport student-athletes. However, institutions maintain the opportunity to seek individual waiver relief for their student-athletes.

What flexibility in terms of full-time enrollment will be given to student-athletes who graduate and wish to compete next year?
Full-time enrollment requirements will still apply for next academic year. However, student-athletes can still use the final semester/quarter exception to the full-time enrollment requirement.

The exception states that student-athletes may practice or compete while enrolled less than full-time as long as the student-athlete is enrolled in the final semester/quarter of the baccalaureate program and is certified by the institution to be carrying the courses necessary to complete all degree requirements.

I am a spring sport student-athlete and I am considering extending my time at Carthage by a year to get in all four years of my sport, how should I go about this?
Spring sport student-athletes should contact Kelsey Peterson, Interim AD (kpeterson12@carthage.edu / 262-552-6177), and the Registrar’s Office (registrar@carthage.edu / 262-551-6100) to explore all options.

Our conference hosts its championship in women’s golf and women’s tennis in the fall, but the national championship is in the spring. How does the waiver apply to a sport with a split season?
The NCAA Championships for men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s golf, and women’s rowing are in the spring. Therefore, the waiver issued by the NCAA regarding the use of season applies to these sports.

Our conference hosted its championship in women’s golf and women’s tennis in the fall. Will those student-athletes get relief from two semesters toward their 10-semester limit?
The blanket waiver issued by the NCAA only provides relief for one semester. However, institutions maintain the opportunity to seek individual waiver relief for their student-athletes.

Can student-athletes practice/compete with an outside team between now and the end of the academic year?
Yes. Student-athletes can practice and/or compete on an outside team immediately without it affecting their eligibility.

Will community swimming lessons continue?
No. All swim lessons scheduled for this semester (sessions 1, 2, and 3) are canceled. Please check back at the swim lessons website for additional updates.

What will happen to non-Carthage athletic events that are scheduled to occur at Carthage this semester?
All external athletic rentals and events have already been canceled through April 13.
