Move-out Procedures

COVID-19 Move-Out Procedures for Residential Students

Important Update: Due to the extended “Safer at Home” and “Stay at Home” orders in Wisconsin, Illinois, and many other states, Carthage has added an additional move-out schedule for May 1-3.

The original dates of April 14-17 remain options for students and families who would prefer to move out sooner, who feel comfortable returning to campus during that time, and who have already made travel arrangements. Students should continue to follow the move-out schedules outlined below.

We recognize how difficult this is for our students and families. We appreciate your understanding as we work to maintain social distancing and reduce crowding during move-out, in order to protect the health of our students and full Carthage community.

Please note:

  • If you are able to move out at your scheduled time for either option below, there is no need to notify us in advance.
  • If you have questions, or if you are unable to move out during your scheduled time, please write to us at housing@carthage.edu. We have been working to accommodate families with special circumstances. Please be aware that our housing@carthage.edu email account is receiving a high volume of inquiries right now, but this is still the best way to reach us! We will respond to you as quickly as we can.

Move Out Instructions

  • Students should bring no more than 2 people to help them move out of their residence hall rooms, in order to keep the number of individuals on campus low for social distancing inside and outside of the residential facilities.
  • Express check-out envelopes will be available in the tented areas, waiting for students upon their arrival. In order to limit exposure to students, families, and staff members, traditional check-outs will not be available.
  • Dumpsters will be available outside residence halls for any trash. There will be one dumpster by Tarble Hall for Tarble residents, one dumpster in the Todd Wehr Center loading dock for Denhart and Johnson residents, one dumpster by Madrigrano Hall for Tower and Madrigrano residents, and two dumpsters in the Oaks Villas — one near Oaks 3 and one near Oaks 6.
  • The mailroom will be open during both our optional and mandatory move out week from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. If students have packages to pick up, we ask that you stop by the mailroom during their hours.
  • Students wishing to donate unwanted food to Luther’s Lunchbox can put items in the labeled donation boxes that will be located in the lobby areas of the residence halls.
  • After students have moved out all of their belongings, students should place their room key into an express check-out envelope, seal the envelope, and drop it off to a designated dropbox within their residential area. Please see the areas listed below:

Dropbox Locations

There will be one tent in front of Denhart/Tarble Halls on Friday, May 1, and one tent outside Madrigrano Hall for the entire weekend (May 1-3).

What to Bring

  • Students are encouraged to bring their own carts, dolleys, etc., to assist with the move-out process.
  • Students are encouraged to bring their own cleaning supplies, as the College will be unable to provide cleaning supplies to individual students.

Additional Information

  • If you are feeling ill or experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, please do not come to campus. The Office of Residential Life can arrange a different move out date with you or help you make arrangements to have another friend or family member move out your belongings.
  • The College cannot provide storage options for students’ personal property at this time. Students are encouraged to work with friends and family off campus to store their personal belongings and/or utilize local storage facilities (i.e. U-Haul, etc.).
  • Please remember to take your bicycle home with you. Any bikes left behind will be discarded by the Maintenance Department.
  • If you are able to move out at your scheduled time, there is no need to notify us in advance.
  • If you have questions, or if you are unable to move out during your scheduled time, please write to us at housing@carthage.edu.
