Carthage and COVID-19

Quarantine Protocols

Carthage has plans in place for supporting and assisting residential students who test positive for COVID-19, or who are displaying symptoms and awaiting test results.

When a student tests positive for COVID-19, or has a presumptive positive case of the virus, Carthage will follow the quarantine housing protocols below. A presumptive positive case of COVID-19 is usually identified by a hospital or clinic, which also contacts the Health Department.

Quarantine Housing Protocols

Students who are identified with a presumptive positive case of COVID-19 who are currently presenting with symptoms will be given the following options for isolation:

Residential Students:

  • Return home for an isolation period of up to 14 days or until test results prove negative.
  • Remain on campus in a designated isolation space. Residential students in Madrigrano, Johnson, Denhart and Tarble halls will move to an isolation space (38 spaces available). Students in The Tower and Oaks will isolate/quarantine in their space.

Off-Campus Students:

  • Return to/stay in off-campus housing for an isolation period of up to 14 days or until test results prove negative.
  • Return home for an isolation period of up to 14 days or until test results prove negative.

Commuter Students:

  • Return/stay at home for an isolation period of up to 14 days or until test results prove negative.

Other Protocols

All students going into isolation will be given information regarding hand and respiratory hygiene, along with cough etiquette, via email.

Residential students going into isolation, if given appropriate PPE (Personal Protection Equipment) from the hospital or clinic, will be able to collect essential items from their living space to take home or to an isolation room. If the student was not issued PPE, the student can provide a list for staff to collect and deliver needed items.

Students’ faculty and any campus employers will be notified for absence verification and will need to offer flip classroom learning opportunities and, potentially, remote work.

If a student is in isolation on campus, a food delivery service with friends will be implemented in coordination with Sodexo. If friend delivery is not available, staff will assist. Students isolating in off-campus housing will be encouraged to use a similar method for food delivery.

We will determine the need to notify any groups who have had close contact with the exposed student. Examples include classmates, co-workers, residential floor mates, teammates, and student organization members.

Any student in isolation, regardless of location, will report daily temperature and symptoms via phone or email with a designated person.

If a student is free of symptoms after 14 days of isolation or gets a negative test result, the student is welcome to return to normal activity.

Isolation/Quarantine Housing Spaces

Carthage has created 38 spaces for isolation/quarantine. Students housed in the Oaks and the Tower will self-isolate within their housing location. Students in Madrigrano, Johnson, Denhart and Tarble halls will be relocated to isolate in one of the newly created isolation spaces.
