Carthage has more than 120 student groups and organizations through which students can get involved, explore possible careers, meet other students, work closely with faculty advisors, and perform community service. The following organizations are popular with CDM students.
Lambda Pi Eta — Chi Chi Chapter
Lambda Pi Eta is the premier nationally recognized Communication Honor Society. It was founded in 1985 at the University of Arkansas, became associated with the National Communication Association in 1988, and was designated the official honor society of NCA in July 1995. Currently, Lambda Pi Eta has more than 400 collegiate chapters. The goals of Lambda Pi Eta are to recognize, foster and reward outstanding scholastic achievement in communication studies; stimulate interest in the field of communication; promote and encourage professional development among communication majors; provide an opportunity to discuss and exchange ideas in the field of communication; establish and maintain closer relationships and mutual understanding between faculty and students; and explore options for graduate education in communication studies.
DRAFT is the Carthage chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Art. Members of this student organization build their portfolios, network, attend studio tours, and actively critique one another’s work. Each semester, they organize exhibitions to display their work. The group also pursues work with real clients.
The Current is Carthage’s student-run news website and biweekly news magazine. It affords students the opportunity to develop as graphic designers, reporters, photographers, and business managers. It is open to students of all majors and encourages individual initiative and involvement.
SPLICE — which stands for Service-based Productions that Launch Initiatives & Change the world by Empowering lives — is a cohort of volunteer media makers at Carthage College that create, write, produce, and edit service-based film productions free of charge for nonprofit organizations. The goals of SPLICE are to support and enhance the community at large via filmmaking and to give students real-world, client-based experiential learning outcomes for their production portfolios. Projects will include PSA, short documentary, and commercials. We will have workshops, guest speakers, compete in film competitions, and go on field trips. Centrique, Carthage’s student-published art and literary magazine is published each year with a collection of writings and art works submitted throughout the school year. Pieces are judged and awarded in a variety of areas. Centrique is currently celebrating its 40th year.
