M.Ed.: Concentrations

These concentrations have been developed collaboratively by a team of K-12 teachers and administrators and Carthage College professors.

Specialized Concentrations


Curriculum and Instruction 
The concentration in Curriculum and Instruction prepares educators for roles curriculum development, assessment, and data-driven decision making. Courses in areas such as multi-cultural instruction, urban issues affecting the learning environment, and student achievement and learning allow educators to develop professionally as the educational environment continues to change.

Students also have the option to complete the Curriculum and Instruction track with add-on Reading License #1316. The Reading #1316 license is the Reading Teacher license, designed for reading teachers working directly with children.

Teacher Leadership
The Teacher Leadership concentration prepares you for leadership roles in site-based management, curriculum development, assessment programs, and data-based decision-making. Innovative coursework on curriculum issues, assessment, professionalism, and action research enables teachers to develop professionally as the educational environment continues to change.

Students also have the option to complete the Teacher Leadership track with add-on Reading License #5017. The Reading #5017 license is the Reading Specialist certification, designed for those who are directly responsible for directing or supervising a reading program in a K-12 setting; this license will require completion of both the Reading #1316 license and the Master’s Degree. 

Higher Education
This concentration prepares students for an administration role at a college or university. Through coursework in higher education, students are prepared for leading in a variety of areas.

Sports Leadership in Education
The Sports Leadership in Education M.Ed. program was designed for those involved in or interested in coaching and athletics in school settings. This accelerated, hybrid concentration offers a unique internship, custom-designed to meet a student’s sport leadership interests. This concentration is a sports-appropriate, challenging, and time-manageable M.Ed. track. The leadership concentration was designed to fully prepare students for sports education-related careers.

Licensed Concentrations


Educational Administration (K-12) with Principal License (#51)
The administration concentration prepares you for leadership roles as principals in the K-12 setting. Coursework focuses on site-based management, school law, school finance, and leadership development.

Reading License #1316
Carthage offers the Reading License #1316 as an add-on license. To earn the #1316 Reading Teacher add-on license, the student must receive the institutional endorsement for the license and meet all the following requirements:

  • Students must be eligible to hold a Wisconsin License to teach or complete an approved teacher education program.
  • Have two years of successful regular classroom teaching experience.
  • Complete four courses, with at least 12 credits earned, beyond the bachelor’s degree. The four courses shall include a practicum in teaching reading at the elementary level and at the middle/secondary level.

Cross-Categorical Special Education License (#801)
This concentration leads licensed teachers to a certification in Special Education. With completion of the certification and research sequence, you will earn a master’s degree with a concentration in special education.

English as a Second Language License (#1395)
Carthage is pleased to announce a new licensure program for the English as a Second Language Wisconsin educator license. This program can be completed at the graduate level leading to the #1395 English as a Second Language add-on license and your Master of Education degree, or it can be completed as a post-baccalaureate program leading to the license only.

Note: This is an add-on license that must attach to one’s initial or primary license. The primary license dictates which grade levels you are eligible to teach with the #1395 add-on license.

Bilingual/Bicultural License (#1023)
Carthage is also pleased to offer an add-on licensure program for the bilingual educator license. This program can be completed at the graduate level leading to the #1023 bilingual education license and your Master of Education degree, or it can be completed as a post-baccalaureate program leading to the license only.

Note: This is an add-on license that must attach to one’s initial or primary license.  The primary license dictates which grade levels you are eligible to teach with the #1023 add-on license.
